In Case of a Flood, Follow These Steps

The outside of a garage that has been affected from high flood water.

When there are several people affected by flooding caused by heavy rain, for example, it may be difficult for you to get in touch with us quickly.

If you’re insured with Orbit Insurance Services, you can submit a claim through our online form. Once you have submitted a claim form, please review this list of actions to take within 24 to 48 hours, to avoid the risk of more serious damage and mold.

1. First, turn off the power throughout the house to avoid any danger of electric shock or fire.

  • Note: Before flipping the main switch to the off position, make sure your feet are not on a wet floor or that you are not leaning against a metal object.

2. Check regularly for signs of weakening of your property's structure (creaks, new cracks in walls or slabs, or shifted concrete blocks in a foundation). If in doubt, consult a professional.

3. At all times, wear the necessary equipment, namely rubber boots, gloves and a mask. Flood water can be contaminated by sewage and various pollutants.

4. When the area is safe, remove the accumulated water with a pump and use an industrial vacuum.

  • Important: Avoid pumping the water too quickly because the pressure could deform the slab or foundations. If the water rises, this means that the surrounding soil is still saturated with water and you must wait around twelve hours before trying again.

5. Get rid of objects that cannot be dried: floor coverings, insulating materials, carpets, wood or gypsum panels, bedding (mattress, box springs, pillows), furniture, etc.

6. Dry all surfaces exposed to moisture with a dehumidifier and a fan to achieve a humidity level between 30% and 50%.

  • You can also open doors and windows to ventilate the flooded area.
  • Note: Remember to close the doors of rooms that have not been flooded to prevent air from circulating there.

7. Flood water can be contaminated and cause infections, gastroenteritis or skin irritations. So, clean the flooded areas with an all-purpose detergent.

8. Before emptying and cleaning spaces in your home, remember to take photos or videos of the disaster damage. You may have to provide these images to your insurer, your municipality or the bank that granted you the mortgage loan.

You should also collect invoices for your property damaged or destroyed by water in order to give them to the insurer, if applicable.
