Staying cool in your RV this summer

Staying cool in your RV all summer long isn’t easy. Don’t let high temperatures this summer deter you from getting out on the road in your RV. Instead, apply a few specific strategies that can reduce the temperatures in your RV and help you get the most out of your AC use.

Ways to keep Your RV cool

Put aside the air conditioner for a moment (though it’s likely you’ll still want to use it). There are several things you can do that can reduce the heat in your RV:

  • Be strategic when parking: The orientation of the RV matters. Your RV’s windshield should not face east or south on hot days. Park your RV so the windshield is facing slightly north or northwest. Keeping it under some trees can also help to minimize heat within the RV.
  • Add roof vents: Roof vents allow hot air, which naturally rises, to escape easily. You can also choose those that have a built-in fan to help facilitate air circulation.
  • Use blinds on windows: Whether shades or curtains, installing these on your windows will help keep the sun’s UV rays from getting in and heating up the space. If you’re parked for a significant amount of time, this is an important investment to protect surfaces from sun damage as well.
  • Cook outside: Anything that generates substantial heat in the RV that can be done outdoors should be. It’s one of the best ways to minimize added heat you simply don’t need.
  • Close your windows in the morning: After a cool night with the windows open to hear the crickets chirping, close the windows early in the morning. That helps lock in some of the cooler air before the temperature outside warms up to uncomfortable levels.
  • Use reflective insulation: Using reflective insulation panels on the roof of your RV can help to reduce the amount of heat it absorbs. If it’s time to update the roof, use reflective colours, like white, instead of dark colours.

When it comes to staying cool in your RV, a combination of these strategies can offer the best possible outcome for you: a cool RV that’s the perfect retreat after a long day of hiking or sightseeing (or even just a long trip across the country). Keeping your RV cool is a process, though. As you go through your day, pay close attention to the simple things you can do to minimize cool air loss, such as keeping windows and doors closed and parking under some shade. That makes your RV adventure a bit more enjoyable.
