Torrential rain — also known as downpours or heavy rainfalls — is becoming more frequent with climate change.
In just a few hours, it can cause water levels to rise rapidly, flood streets, and lead to serious damage to homes.
Without proper preparation, your home could be vulnerable to water infiltration, sewer backups, and even structural damage.
Here are a few essential tips to help minimize the risks.
1. Inspect your gutters and downspouts regularly
Make sure they are clean and free of leaves or debris, especially in spring and fall.
Direct downspouts so they drain water at least 2 metres away from your foundation.
2. Monitor your foundation
Check for cracks or weak spots in your home’s foundation. Even small cracks can become direct entry points for water.
Call in a professional if you notice signs of moisture or water infiltration in the basement.
3. Install a backwater valve
A backwater valve on the main sewer line prevents sewage from backing up into your basement during heavy rains.
In many municipalities, this installation is recommended — and sometimes even mandatory — for homes in flood-prone areas.
4. Equip your basement with a sump pump
A sump pump helps remove water that may accumulate under your foundation or in the crawl space.
Consider a battery backup system in case of power outages, which are common during storms.
5. Landscape wisely
Shape the terrain around your house to create a natural slope that directs water away from your walls.
Avoid features that block water flow, like poorly positioned concrete edging or uneven driveways.
6. Seal potential water entry points
Ensure basement windows are properly sealed and elevated above ground level.
Use caulking or waterproof membranes around all openings, pipes, vents, etc.
7. Don’t overlook indoor precautions
Avoid storing valuables directly on the basement floor.
Use elevated shelving and watertight containers for storing important documents, photos, and keepsakes.
While we can't control the weather, we can significantly reduce the impact of heavy rains with a few simple actions and good preparation. Taking the right steps now means better protection for your home — and greater peace of mind.
